It's hard to tell in the photo above, but that's my wife Amy, handing over the fruits of her fundraising efforts ($2500.00 +) to the Venango Chamber Orchestra yesterday. A nice chunk of change for the group, if do say so myself. The concert itself was great (aside from the old guy behind me who, inexplicably, began whistling during one piece.) especially Finlandia.

Usually, when someone asks me what I do, I make something up - some sort of conversation stopper like "Roto-rooter man". If I tell people I'm a writer they say something like "Oh ho! I better watch my grammar around you", or, "I was gonna write a book once", or the very worse of all, "Me too!"
In short, everyone has a story — and everyone wants to tell it. Fewer people may be reading, but everywhere you turn, Americans are sounding their barbaric yawps over the roofs of the world, as good old Walt Whitman, himself a self-published author, once put it.

In honor of Earth Day, allow me to promote my own bad self. Rubbish, the new book that has a chapter on my upcycled notebooks, is chock full of earth friendly projects like a lawn chair webbing clutch, Photo-negative lampshade, or a License plate pendant, and is, of course, available at fine bookstores everywhere. As a bonus, it also contains one of the worst pictures ever taken of me, where I look fat(ter), stupid(er), and mean(er) than ever before. The schadenfreude alone is worth the $13.

Also, as long as I'm preening like a disabled, needy peacock, don't forget that I'll be hosting performance poetry workshops at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts School in Pittsburgh on Friday. How do you get me to do one of my many song and dance routines for you and yours? Send me an invitation, silly to talk about what I offer or to customize something for your needs!

Jan Beatty made fun of me at a reading many years ago, but I was still shocked to see that the Joseph-Beth Booksellers on the South Side of Pittsburgh had issued qualifications as to what poems she could read at her book release party. She's demanding a public apology. Still, though, it is their store and I can't imagine that she would be unable to find any other store to host her party. Tempest in a teapot? Probably, but entertaining nonetheless.

Two fantastic summer opportunities for area college students:

The Pennsylvania Downtown Center (PDC) partnered with Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful to develop a service learning internship program for college students.

Interns will work with the community to create a mural for the historic Guthrie Theatre, the keystone of downtown Grove City. Key components of this project include developing a mural theme using both the community’s and the wall-owner’s input, as well as engaging the community in painting the mural. Interns will develop the project workplan, lead community planning meetings to create a mural design, recruit and engage volunteers and plan an unveiling event during the internship.

Also, avaialable is placement in Meadville, where interns will help project partners refine the mural concept to capture Meadville’s history as a manufacturing community and birthplace of the zipper. Interns also will play an integral role in developing and implementing mural workshops to engage local youth in the mural process, from concept to install. Read between the Signs (RBTS) represents a community-based public art project that demonstrates the importance of collaboration and reuse.
