RIP Stephen Michael Luncinski who played Stefan the Castle Prankster on Chiller Theater:

Chiller Theatre was so popular in Pittsburgh that it kept Saturday Night Live off of its NBC affiliate WIIC in Pittsburgh for four years. Finally giving in to pressure from NBC, Chiller Theater was forced to follow SNL at 1:00 a.m. where it was reduced to a single feature movie program.

Franklin's Barrow-Civic Theatre picked up a $5,000 donation from Joy Global.

It's almost certain that the $6.34 million renovations for Drake Well park won't be completed (or possibly even started) by the time the Oil 150 celebration ends in December 2009

Allegheny College's annual Senior Projects Exhibit, an opportunity for graduating studio art majors and art and technology majors to present their senior projects to the public, will open with a public reception in the Bowman, Penelec and Megahan Galleries on Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 7 to 9 p.m.map

“Shaping Spaces,” the title of this semester's Senior Projects Exhibit, will feature the work of eight artists. Jesse Beauchamp, majoring in studio art and geology, will construct an installation evoking the dramatic and secretive rearrangements of American landscapes that are the result of fossil fuel extraction.

Two art and technology majors will show their work: Rachel Berenson will invite gallery viewers to explore exotic locations through a web site she has designed, while Jessica Zeidler will juxtapose technical culture with traditional craft in an installation that combines digital forms with hand-sewn pieces.

The work of five studio art majors will be presented. Tom Kierzkowski will create a fantasy-narrative-installation that explores the limits of surveillance and privacy in a wired world. Calahan Malone will present a series of drawings that explore the fluid boundary between reality and imagination. Erin O'Boyle will present a children's picture book about an English teapot who generously offers assistance to her American friend. Andrew Slemenda will provide gallery viewers with a participatory experience, combining performance and installation to expose cultural ambivalence and anxiety about sexism, consumerism and nationalism. Maja Sweeny will show a series of prints depicting dream imagery.

The exhibit can be viewed through Tuesday, Dec. 16; please call for special hours during this exhibit. The Art Galleries, which are wheelchair accessible, are located in Doane Hall of Art, east of North Main Street, between College and John Streets. For additional information, call 814-332-4365.

Plans include an initial meeting on Wednesday August 13th to pickup cameras, a camera drop at the Venango Area Chamber of Commerce by the afternoon of the 20th and an assessment of the photos on or about the 25th of the month. The Allegheny College Music Department is holding auditions for the fall season of its College Chorus, a choral ensemble that combines singers from Meadville and surrounding communities with Allegheny students.

In order to join the Chorus, community singers must successfully pass a brief audition given individually at the beginning of the first rehearsal they attend.

College Chorus rehearsals are held on Monday evenings from 7:30 to 9 p.m. in the Allegheny Choir Room on the second floor of the Campus Center. The first rehearsal is on Sept. 8. Community singers have until Sept. 22 to pass the audition, at which time membership will be closed for the fall season. Those who audition successfully are expected to attend a minimum of nine rehearsals, including the final rehearsal on Dec. 1.

Interested singers are encouraged to contact Ward Jamison, Allegheny director of choral activities, at (814) 332-3305 or wjamison@allegheny.edu.

If you're coming to Guess Whose Hair I'm Wearing tonight or tomorrow make sure that you say "hi". I'll be the short fat ugly guy wearing black, a frantic expression on his face and a glass of box wine in his hand.

The Franklin Barrow Civic has made a fantastic move in offering a family friendly price package for all remaining shows in the current season. You can buy 2 adult tickets and 2 children's tickets for $50. About $12 per ticket. While I'd like to see a drop to $10 per ticket and maybe even a student rush program (Tickets drop to $5 for students in the last half hour before a show). This is a fabulous step in the right direction of making the arts available and accessibly to everyone in Venango County.

Speaking of the Barrow, Dave the tech guy (no last names please) is moving to a new position at Joy Manufacturing (with the very talented Linda Henderson of the Latonia Theatre). He will be missed.

The two most fabulous things I saw in downtown Franklin this week?

I wonder if they were related somehow?

Several years ago, my wife and I took her parents on one of the scheduled winery tours along Lake Erie. While I expected fancy pants like myself learning about local wines, instead there were busloads of drunks (include a group of Erie area teachers who somehow got permission to use one of the district buses – I’m guessing they didn’t mention the keg they placed on board. I will admit however, that I was less shocked by that than I was at the Volant Winery where the woman at the wine bar told my brother and me that Brokeback Mountain was the funniest movie she had ever seen) flinging elbows, cursing, and, then having a very special moment when one of the patrons wet himself while shouting nonsense.

That was the last time I went on one of the tours and I always try to steer people away from them. I thought it some sort of hillbilly spillover, but it turns out that all the nations’ wine regions are suffering from drunks.

A Gannon prof who lives in Pittsburgh writes about his commute. Perhaps what's most interesting is not the commute (I know plenty of profs who do crazy long commutes), but how he characterizes Erie of being berefit of chess clubs and ballet. Ouch. On a side note, I too someday dream of ditching my current commute for a sweet teaching gig at Venango Campus. Someday....

Benefit Show - I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change

One of the great things about living in Venango is that everything is darn cheap. Last week I was invited to Pittsburgh's Bricolage, an event where 6 writers have 12 hours to write a 10-minute play inspired by a 90-minute journey on a city bus. The directors and actors have the next 12 hours to rehearse, memorize and stage each play to debut that same evening exactly 24 hours after the first meeting. It was a benefit for a theatre company and tickets cost $75. Ouch.
However, this Saturday the 20th, at 8:00, the Barrow will host a re-presentation of the production of I Love You, You're Perfect, Now Change .
As Director Peter Greene writes in Venangoland:

The show is a series of short vignettes capturing every aspect of meeting and mating from the very first moments of nervous first datery all the way through marriage, kids and, um, maturity. It is a musical about humor and love in everyday, ordinary life. The tunes are fun and, the characters are many of the people that we all know. The show does deal with mature themes and situations, but in a grown-up manner. The cast is composed of local theater veterans Steve Luxbacher, Jodi Hoover, Steve Teig and Suzi Ditzenberger, The musical accompaniment is provided by Kristen Criado and Jill Mattson.

It too is a benefit show, helping to the theater defray the cost of some new sound equipment. Prior to the production there will be a silent auction.

For $15. I'm serious. Only in Western PA. Call 437-3440 or 800-537-7769.

Speaking of Jill, this Saturday, January 20, at 1:00 pm Holly Nowak of the Arts Council of Erie and Oil City artist Jill Mattson will meet with artists in the Great Room of the National Transit Building to explain how to respond to the Arts in Education call for professional artists and become eligible for state-funded residencies and projects in schools and community organizations. Individual artists, companies, and ensembles may apply. The deadline is March 15. Call (814)676-5303 to reseve a spot.

Sylvia Coast and Kaycee Reib are looking for input on a book on Venango County's black history. Considering that everyone I talk to who owns an old house claims that it was a stop on the Underground Railroad, it's going to be a pretty big book.

The Titusville Redevelopment Authority is looking for a buyer for the Four Sons Brewery.

The RickDan Band is sponsering a big ol' music festival Saturday. 11 bands for $8 bucks at the Franklin Presbyterian Church 1250 Elk Street, Franklin, Pennsylvania 16323. Playing will be Signal Home, Loko Phylum, Hand in Hand, Nothing Unexpected, Hope on a Rope, and many others.

Although I think that the PA Lottery groundhog is one of the creepiest animatronics since 1950s Disney, Phil himself still has street cred (meadow cred?). Check out Groundhog Crossing for this year's build up.
